A Fraction Is a Division

The fraction bar in 5/8 is a division sign in disguise — it means exactly "5 divided by 8," and carrying out that division is the entire conversion.

A numerator smaller than its denominator, like 5 in 5/8, always divides out to a value less than 1. A numerator equal to or larger than its denominator, like 9 in 9/4, divides out to a value of 1 or more — an improper fraction converts to a decimal greater than or equal to one the same way a proper fraction converts to a decimal between 0 and 1.

The division falls into a loop, and a digit or block of digits repeats forever. 1/3 = 0.333… repeats because 3 is a prime factor that never divides evenly into any power of 10.

The rule in full: reduce the fraction to lowest terms, then look at the denominator's prime factors. If they are only 2s and 5s — the prime factors of 10 — the decimal terminates. If any other prime factor appears (3, 7, 11, 13, and so on), the decimal repeats. 20 = 2² × 5 has only 2s and 5s, so 1/20 = 0.05 terminates; 12 = 2² × 3 contains a 3, so 1/12 = 0.08333… repeats.

Dividing Without a Calculator

Long division works for any fraction, and knowing the three-step rhythm makes it fast even for denominators you can't do in your head.

  1. Set up the division. Numerator ÷ denominator — for 7/16, that's 7 ÷ 16.
  2. Add a decimal point and zeros to the numerator as needed. 16 doesn't go into 7, so make it 70, then 700, then 7000 as the division continues.
  3. Keep dividing until the remainder is zero, or a remainder repeats. 7 ÷ 16 = 0.4375 exactly, with a final remainder of zero.

If a remainder you've already seen shows up again, the digits from that point on will repeat in the same order forever — that's the signal to stop dividing and mark the repeating block instead of continuing indefinitely.
