Fractional Drill Bit Sizes

Fractional drill bits run from 1/64" to 1" (and beyond) in steps of one sixty-fourth of an inch. A 1/4" bit drills a 0.25" hole, and a 3/8" bit drills a 9.525 mm hole — the system most drill indexes are built around.

01 — The default system

The Sizing System Every Shop Starts With

Fractional sizing is the oldest and most common drill bit system in US shops, stepping in the same halving pattern — halves, quarters, eighths, sixteenths — as a tape measure.

A basic fractional index usually runs 1/16" to 3/8" or 1/2" in 1/16" steps, which is enough for the overwhelming majority of drilling: pilot holes, hardware clearance, dowel holes, and general fabrication. A more complete set steps down to 1/32" or 1/64" for finer control, but even then, fractional sizing has a built-in limitation — it can only land on 64 distinct positions between 0" and 1", spaced roughly 0.0156" apart.

02 — Formula

How Fractional Sizes Are Numbered

Every fractional size is simply a count of sixty-fourths, reduced to its simplest form.

D=n ÷ 64

D, the decimal size, equals the position n (from 1 to 64) divided by 64, then the fraction n/64 is reduced to lowest terms for the name.

  • nThe position in the sequence, from 1 to 64.
  • DThe decimal size: n ÷ 64.

Worked calculation — n = 24

  1. 24 ÷ 64 = 0.375Decimal value
  2. GCD(24, 64) = 8Reduce the fraction
