Reading a vernier or digital caliper
A vernier caliper displays decimal inches on a main scale plus a sliding vernier scale that resolves one additional decimal digit, typically down to 0.001 inch. A digital caliper does the same job electronically, showing the reading directly on an LCD screen without requiring the user to align two scales by eye. Both tools measure the same way, jaws closing around or inside a part, but the digital version removes the small amount of reading error that comes from lining up vernier marks, which matters when a part is being checked against a tight blueprint tolerance.
Reading a micrometer

Most of the world measures machined parts in millimeters, but US manufacturing, and industries tied to legacy US standards such as aerospace and automotive tooling, still specify decimal inches on a large share of drawings. The conversion between the two is fixed and exact: one inch equals 25.4 mm exactly, so a 0.500 inch dimension is always 12.7 mm, and a 10 mm dimension is always 0.3937 inches.
