The division method

Every fraction is a division problem in disguise. The line between numerator and denominator means "divide". 3/8 reads as "three divided by eight", and that division gives 0.375. Long division works for every case; a calculator does it instantly.

The result tells you the same value as the fraction, just written in a different format. 3/8 and 0.375 are the same length, the same weight, the same anything.

Terminating versus repeating decimals

If the denominator's prime factors are only 2 and 5, the decimal terminates. 1/2 = 0.5. 1/4 = 0.25. 1/8 = 0.125. 1/10 = 0.1. 1/20 = 0.05.

If the denominator has any other prime factor, the decimal repeats. 1/3 = 0.333… 1/6 = 0.1666… 1/7 = 0.142857142857… Inch fractions always have denominators that are powers of 2 (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64), so they always terminate.

Why convert?

Decimal format is faster to type, faster to compare, and faster to plug into spreadsheets, CAD, and calculators. Fractional format is faster to read on a ruler. Most measurement work goes through both formats during a single job: a drawing dimension in decimal becomes a mark on a piece of stock in fractional, and vice versa. See the fractional inch to decimal converter for the inch-specific version.

Worked example: converting 11/32 to a decimal

Divide the numerator by the denominator: 11 ÷ 32 = 0.34375. There is no simplification step needed here, since a fraction-to-decimal conversion is just division; simplifying only matters when you go the other way, from decimal back to fraction.

In inch terms, 11/32" equals 0.34375" or 8.73125 mm (0.34375 × 25.4). That places it between the 5/16" mark (0.3125", 7.9375 mm) and the 3/8" mark (0.375", 9.525 mm) on a standard ruler, which is why 11/32" only appears on finer machinist's scales and not on most carpentry tape measures.

Converting mixed numbers to decimals

A mixed number like 2 3/8 converts in two steps: convert the fractional part to decimal, then add the whole number. 3/8 equals 0.375, so 2 3/8 equals 2 + 0.375 = 2.375. The same approach works for any mixed number, including inch-and-fraction measurements read straight off a tape measure.

For dedicated mixed-number handling, including converting the other direction from decimal back into a whole number plus fraction, use the mixed number converter. For inch fractions specifically simplified against a fixed set of denominators (8, 16, 32, 64), the decimal to fraction calculator and the equivalent fractions chart are the faster tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Divide the numerator by the denominator: 3/8 means 3 ÷ 8, which equals 0.375. This works for every fraction, whether it terminates cleanly or repeats forever, and it is exactly what the calculator above does the moment you type a value.
